My 12" power book has died.
Only 10 months old.
At 9 months the cd drive ceased to function.
At 9 1/2 months it would go to sleep but have difficulty waking up.
And then one morning it simply never awoke.
Now I did happen to back up the night before so I wasn't terribly worried about loss of data.
But I was leaving town in 2 days and new that it was not getting fixed in that short a period of time. I figured I would be carrying my old Fujitsu laptop. The 4 year old laptop that still works perfectly save for the little problem with the backlight. I was not looking forward to it. Since getting a Mac I don't like having to go back to a windows machine. I called my father(a Mac wizard of sorts)and informed him of the problem. He mentioned trying Tek Serve or even the 5th Avenue Apple cube, store, place, thing. But I didn't have the time to waste so I simply called Apple and told them of my dilemma to which they responded by promising to send me out a box to return the broken Power Book. I figured I could have the repaired computer sent to me at a hotel next week when it was repaired. When I failed to receive the box today(last day before I leave)I called Apple to inquire. They said my record indicated that I would call them with an address that I wanted the box sent to. Silly me thought they were already sending me a box, to my home address. I was wrong. So that's the crap part of the story. The good part is that my father offered me the use of a brand new MacBook Pro 15". Which is what I am typing on now. Nice. I have the spent the better part of the day installing things and tweaking it to make it feel like home. Still struggling with reinstalling a backup made of the dead PowerBook onto the new MacBook. I think my problem is with the short name specified in the path of the backup files. If the new machine has a different short name then the reinstall wont work. At least that's what I think based on what I have read and experienced. I will keep trying.
